PUBLIC PROTESTS

As war in Iraq became more likely, public protests against it were held in cities around the world. On the weekend of February 15–16, between 6 and 10 million people took part in antiwar marches in up to 60 different countries.4

Many protesters carried signs saying “No Blood for Oil” and claimed that the main reason for the war was to protect Western oil companies. The protesters insisted that there was no proof that Iraq was creating WMDs. They declared that it was against international law to invade another country, even if its leader was corrupt. Protesters also expressed outrage that the war would lead to thousands of innocent lives being lost.

Despite many protests against the war, the U.S. government continued to gather support for its invasion plans. By March 2003, 49 countries had responded to U.S. pressure and declared that they were in favor of military action.5 Of this total, however, only four nations (the United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, and Denmark) contributed troops to the invasion force.6 This small group was in stark contrast to the force of 34 nations that fought in the First Gulf War, and it reflected widespread doubts about whether an invasion of Iraq could really be justified.
